WWF Superstars of Wrestling – May 27th, 1989
By Brian Bayless on December 20, 2016
May 20, 1989
From the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, NE
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
This week, Zeus will be the guest on the “Brother Love Show.” Also action will be Ted DiBiase, Demolition, Dino Bravo, and Bret Hart plus the Rockers vs. Fabulous Rougeau Brothers match from this past episode of “Wrestling Challenge.”
Koko B. Ware vs. The Black Knight
Black Knight takes down Koko as Vince tells us he looks like the “Masked Maurader.” Koko hits a dropkick as we hear from The Genius in an insert promo as he promises to defeat Koko. Black Knight hammers away in the corner but misses an elbow drop as Koko hits a missile dropkick before putting the Black Knight away with the Ghostbuster (3:36).
Thoughts: Its been months since Koko has been on TV. His hair was regular color but he had different tights. Looks like he is going to get a future match with The Genius.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week’s focus is on the film “No Holds Barred” as Tony Schiavone interviews fans about their excitement for the film. Well, we didnt actually see Schiavone but Mean Gene said it was him anyway. We then see the trailer for the film, which opens this Friday. Half of the people seemed obviously told what to say here.
Vince lets us know we can buy the “No Holds Barred” magazine this coming Thursday. They went all out in trying to make as much money as possible off of this film.
“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil vs. Scott Colton
DiBiase beats on Colton and sends him to the floor as the announcers are talking about “No Holds Barred.” Jesse is pissed over not getting an interview in the movie’s magazine as we hear from DiBiase in an insert promo as he calls himself the most devious mind the world has ever known. Back to the match as DiBiase stays in control then puts Colton away with the Million Dollar Dream (2:59).
Thoughts: Another impressive TV squash match win for DiBiase as his feud with Jake was talked about on commentary a bit.
Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. Tito Santana calls out his former partner Rick Martel for turning his back on him while Rick Rude & Bobby Heenan as they talk about the Ultimate Warrior keep sending in letters asking for a rematch while Rude puts over all of the fan mail he gets from women.
Hillbilly Jim tells us to see “No Holds Barred.”
The Rockers vs. Fabulous Rougeau Brothers segment from last week’s “Wrestling Challenge.”
Mooney is back in the Event Center. Bad News Brown says no one else in the WWF has what it takes to stop his reign of terror while Big John Studd tells us he bulked up to 390 lbs of solid muscle to stand up to the biggest bully in wrestling, Andre the Giant.
The Ultimate Warrior screams as he tells us all to see “No Holds Barred.”
Bret “The Hitman” Hart vs. Randy Spear
Ronnie Garvin is the referee here. Mr. Perfect is shown in an insert promo as he is in disbelief people like Bret Hart do not believe he is in fact perfect as he vows to defeat Bret, who takes control of this match. Bret stays in control until he puts Spear away with a piledriver (2:28).
Thoughts: They are still pushing Bret’s feud with Mr. Perfect, which has only been built up through insert and Event Center promos on TV.
Brother Love Show with guest Zeus, who he introduces as the real star of “No Holds Barred.” Zeus looks menacing as he grunts while Brother Love puts him over as being bigger and better than Hulk Hogan. Zeus tells Hogan how he is bigger, badder and will also destroy him as we got clips played in between. The camera zooms in on Zeus’s face before he leaves. More “No Holds Barred” hype although its apparent they have plans for a potential Zeus vs. Hogan match.
Warren Bianchi vs. Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart
We hear from Hercules in an insert promo as he tells Bravo he will not be embarrassed. Bravo hits Bianchi with an inverted atomic drop then pounds his chest after dropping an elbow. Bravo then catches Bianchi with an airplane spin before putting him away with a side slam (2:04).
Thoughts: Bravo was just insanely bulky here and moved ten times slower than usual.
We get a clip from “No Holds Barred” as the Hulkster beats the crap out of two robbers at a diner.
Demolition vs. Tom Stone & Mike Thomas
Demolition beat on their opponents as we hear from Slick & Twin Towers as they vow to become the next Tag Team Champions then Demolition put Thomas away with the Decapitation (2:14).
Thoughts: Your typical Demolition TV squash match as they are groomed for a feud against the Twin Towers. To be honest, Demolition has been in some lousy feuds since turning babyface.
Mooney is in the Event Center. We hear from Bobby Heenan & The Brainbusters as they promise to be on top of the Tag Team Division very soon as they put over the dynamics of what makes them a great team. Jake Roberts calls DiBiase a “poor, little rich kid” and that he made a fatal mistake when he attacked him. Jake then tells DiBiase that his time is running out. Both of these promos were quite good.
In action next week will be Brutus Beefcake, Tito Santana, The Barbarian, and the Brainbusters. Plus, an update on “No Holds Barred.” The show then closes with promos from The Big Bossman & Slick and Hulk Hogan to hype their cage match on “Saturday Night’s Main Event.”
Final Thoughts: This show was focused on hyping the shit out of “No Holds Barred” and little else. At least their was a “Saturday Night’s Main Event” to watch this same day to get in your wrestling fix. Really not much to add here.
