Gene Okerlund in 1988

I randomly remembered today something I read years ago about Mean Gene leaving the WWF briefly in 1988. Indeed, History of the WWE shows a gap in appearances from April til September of that year.

Any insight? Perhaps THAT was why they brought on Mooney when they did? I always thought he replaced DeGeorge but apparently Craig was there until September with Mooney.

​This was mostly covered in the 88 Observer recaps, but basically Vince and Gene had a relationship where Gene would quit and then show up at TV the next day like George Costanza and they’d all pretend it never happened. ​
