By Brian Bayless on December 9, 2016
May 6, 1989
From the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glen Falls, NY
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
This week’s featured match is Jake Roberts vs. Ted DiBiase. Also in action are the Brainbusters, Honky Tonk Man, Rockers, and the Red Rooster
The Rockers vs. George South & Boris Zhukov
South & Zhukov attack the Rockers from behind but the Rockers come back with a double dropkick. Shawn works over South then Zhukov tags and misses a charge in the corner. Marty tags and hits a dropkick for two then the Rockers hit a double clothesline as the announcers talk about their feud against the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers. Shawn gets backed into the corner but South accidentally hits Zhukov and knocks him off of the apron. Shawn super kicks South then the Rockers hit a double missile dropkick for the win. Well, that was the idea anyway (4:05).
Thoughts: No idea what happened to Nikolai Volkoff but he did not return until the Fall. This was to put over the Rockers as they are feuding with the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week’s focus is on the Ronnie Garvin vs. Greg Valentine match from last week where the loser would retire as Valentine won by holding onto the tights during a small package. We then hear Valentine & Jimmy Hart over retiring Garvin then Garvin himself enters wearing referee attire and says he is a man of his word but is know a special enforcer referee as Valentine & Hart are not so happy. And now we have a way for Garvin to remain on TV after losing last week and he can resume his feud with Valentine.
We get another trailer for “No Holds Barred.”
Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Chuck Williams
Williams would later go on to become the Rockin’ Rebel in ECW. Hillbilly Jim is shown in an insert promo as he hypes up his future matches against the Honky Tonk Man. Honky takes control to start as Vince bitches about Hart’s megaphone and says it should be taken away as Jesse notes it should….right after they take away Duggan’s 2×4. Vince changes subjects then Honky puts Williams away with the Shake, Rattle, and Roll (1:52).
Thoughts: Several months after losing the Intercontinental Title, Honky is now down the card feuding with Hillbilly Jim.
WWF Update with Sean Mooney. We get more hype for the Nashville Auditorium show as Rick Martel & Slick run down Tito Santana while Demolition calls out the Twin Towers to put over their matches.
Iron Mike Sharpe vs. Red Rooster
Garvin is the referee for this match. Rooster works over Sharpe to start as we hear from the Brooklyn Brawler with Bobby Heenan in an insert promo as they run down the Rooster. Sharpe lands a few shots but eats boot on a charge then Rooster hits a slam before putting him away with the Chicken Wing (1:54). After the match, Sharpe shoves Garvin but ends up getting knocked down with an elbow smash.
Thoughts: Garvin as the no-nonsense referee was the main focus here. They are still going on with the Rooster/Brawler feud as that is really just a crap feud.
The Barbarian w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Tony Durante
The Barbarian destroys Durante as we hear from Jim Neidhart in an insert promo laughing about he likes to give out pain and torture just like the Barbarian. The announcers point out how Barbarian is crazy as he hits a powerslam then puts Durante away with a top rope clothesline (1:43).
Thoughts: While Bret Hart is off to feud with Mr. Perfect, his partner gets to feud with the Barbarian. And the Warlord wrestles now in silence during his TV squash matches.
Back in the Event Center, we get more hype for the Nashville house show. The Ultimate Warrior tells Rick Rude he is going to seek and destroy him in order to reclaim the Intercontinental Title while Randy Savage & Sensational Sherri tell Brutus Beefcake just how intense they are.
Another vignette to hype the return of Jimmy Snuka.
Hercules vs. Brian Elder
We hear from Dino Bravo & Jimmy Hart in an insert promo as they tell Hercules that Bravo is the world’s strongest man. Hercules overpowers Elder then puts him away with the backbreaker submission (1:38).
Thoughts: Quick match to put over the Bravo/Hercules feud to decide who is the strongest man.
Brother Love Show with guests Bobby Heenan & King Haku. Brother Love talks about how everyone wants to be king for a day, including Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Heenan makes fun of Duggan for being a common idiot but that if he wants a chance at the crown, he can bring it on anytime, anyplace so we can find out what kind of man he is and that’s “8-to-5 scum.” Heenan ends by trying to get the crowd to bow to Haku. Heenan tries but the King Haku gimmick is a total dud.
Another clip from “No Holds Barred.”
Virgil vs. Jake “The Snake” Roberts
DiBiase is not here as the announcers want to know what happened. We then see Tony Schiavone in the dressing room as DiBiase is using a vaporizer and taking his temperature while saying his doctor told him he’s too ill to compete. However, DiBiase said that does not mean Jake gets a night off and that he can see the match from the locker room. Jake attacks Virgil from behind to start. He slams him down but Virgil is able to land a few shots. Virgil chokes out Jake for a bit but gets caught with a clothesline then Jake hits the DDT for the win (1:39). After the match, Jake reaches into Virgil’s pockets and grabs a wad of cash as he starts handing it out to the fans while Jesse screams about how he should be brought up on robbery charges. Jake then reaches for Damien but DiBiase slides in from behind, wearing his wrestling gear, and applies the Million Dollar Dream. DiBiase then shoves a few $100 bills in Jake’s mouth then leaves as officials check on Jake.
Thoughts: Awesome segment to really heat up the Ted/Jake feud. From DiBiase faking illness to Jake handing away money, everything was done to perfection.
“The Genius” Lanny Poffo tells us how its unfair when he’s called “stupid” and a “fraud.” However, he will get revenge on all of those who slander him as he is the world’s smartest man.
The Brainbusters w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Gene Ligon & Mark Brown
The Brainbusters beat on Brown as Vince tells us that Jake is currently “woozy” in the locker room. The Bushwhackers are shown in an insert promo talking about how they will take care of the Brainbusters and the “weasel” as Ligon tags and lands a few punches before Arn takes him down with a spinebuster. Tully then dropkicks Brown off of the apron and that ties up the ref so the Brainbusters can hit Ligon with the spike piledriver for the win (2:02).
Thoughts: Another fun performance by the Brainbusters, who bring it even in TV enhancement matches.
Back in the Event Center, the Brooklyn Brawler & Bobby Heenan run down the Red Rooster to hype up their match in Nashville while Brutus Beefcake warns Randy Savage about what will happen to him.
Next week in action will be the Ultimate Warrior, Brutus Beefcake, and Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. King Haku for the crown. Plus, the introduction of Zeus, an interview with Miss Elizabeth, and an update on Jake Roberts.
Final Thoughts: Decent show leading into a loaded show for next week. They really heated up the DiBiase/Jake feud along with the “No Holds Barred” hype.
