Up Up Down Down destroying kayfabe?!?!

One of the interesting discussions that’s come up in the daily threads is the illusion of kayfabe, in which some ott–I mean, posters wish wrestlers kept it up more, with Up Up Down Down being a big offender to some. Not just the premise of the show, but apparently WWE has also promoted it, which seems to fly in the face of the writing on the show. To some folks, you can’t show Xavier Woods being scared of Bray Wyatt on TV, then have RAW promote UUDD where Bray chills in the background during one of Xavier’s tournaments.

What do you think about that? For me personally, I don’t give a shit — it’s all a show, seeing guys hang together doesn’t break anything for me, IT’S NOT REAL TO ME DAMMIT! (And plus, I like the sense of camaraderie most of the roster has considering the decades of locker room horror stories, petty cliques, and blow usage). But does WWE need to solidify kayfabe more, not just UUDD but how they carry themselves in general out of the ring? Or is that just carny stuff from a bygone era?

​It’s just dumb carny mentality from a dead era. Now, that being said, I wouldn’t promote it on the TV show, but the people who visit the website or the YouTube channel or the Network are all less likely to care about kayfabe. As long as the internal logic of the TV show is maintained WHILE YOU’RE WATCHING IT, the rest is outside gaga and doesn’t matter. But that’s why the Natalya commercial on the TLC PPV bugged so much. They were literally saying on the very show that we were paying to see that the characters involved didn’t matter and were just actors playing a role. It’d be like Flash and Supergirl doing a crossover episode and then stopping to reminisce about how they used to be on Glee together. ​
