AndreMania VII
By Scott Keith on November 29, 2016
In the most recent Observer Flashback, we learn that WrestleMania VII was moved to the smaller Sports Arena before the main event was even announced on TV. If it was less the card and more the state of the business in general that was the biggest factor in slow ticket sales, it makes me wonder…
Let’s imagine that Andre the Giant was still as healthy in 1991 as he was in 1987, and that the heel turn/WrestleMania III angle never happened. If they had run the exact same angle in the exact same way, only four years later, do you think that would have drawn a big enough crowd to fill a stadium? Or was the business across the board just so ice cold during this period that no match was going to work?
Curious to see what you think.
Business was WAY down. In 87, just having Hogan on the card would sell out a 17,000 seat arena, but in 1990 their average house show attendance was something like 3000 people. It was ridiculously bad thanks to Warrior wrecking business. And ratings were in the toilet for SNME and their USA shows. Plus without strong competition from WCW, there was just no way the business was
strong enough to sell out that LA Coliseum, even with the best main event possible.
