WWF Superstars of Wrestling – April 29th, 1989
By Brian Bayless on November 25, 2016
April 29, 1989
From the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, NY
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
Unfortunately, I was unable to obtain a full copy of this show. Its missing Demolition and Jim Neidhart squash matches along with the WWF Update segment showing Brutus Beefcake getting attacked by Randy Savage & Sensational Sherri last week on the Brother Love Show.
Mooney is in the Event Center to hype up the 5/6 Nashville show. We hear from the Red Rooster as he calls out the Brooklyn Brawler to hype up their match as the Bobby Heenan & Rick Rude
Brian Johnson vs. Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart
Vince asks shocked over Jimmy managing Bravo as there is no mention of Frenchy Martin. Bravo beats on Johnson in the corner to start. We hear from Hercules in an insert promo as he tells Bravo about not being intimidated and will have to prove he is the strongest man. Back to the match as Bravo catches Johnson in an airplane spin before getting the win with a side slam (1:41).
Thoughts: They did not explain why Bravo is now managed by Hart or what happened to Frenchy. The Hercules/Bravo feud is still being pushed to the dismay of fans across the country.
No Holds Barred will be released in theaters on June 2nd.
Gary Royal vs. Ultimate Warrior
Warrior hits Royal with a diving shoulder tackle before the bell. Warrior then hits a backdrop as the fans are going mental. Royal is chopped through the ropes as we hear from Rude in an insert promo as he calls out the Warrior for not being able to get over his loss at WrestleMania. Warrior then finishes Royal off with the press slam/splash combo (2:30).
Thoughts: The story here is that Warrior has snapped due to being cheated out of the Intercontinental Title. The crowd was really into him here.
Mooney is in the Event Center to hype up the 5/6 Nashville show. Slick & Rick Martel call Tito Santana a loser and that Martel will prove that to everyone. Brutus Beefcake then warns Randy Savage about coming after him as he will think about him day and night.
A Jimmy Snuka vignette airs to hype his return.
Mr. Perfect vs. Joe Cruz
Perfect hammers away then hits his neck snap as we hear from Bret Hart in an insert promo tells Perfect its time to deal with the “Excellence of Execution.” Cruz fights back and hits a slam but Perfect cuts him off then hits the Perfect Plex for the win (1:41).
Thoughts: Perfect has been booked strong on TV going into his feud with Bret.
Brother Love Show with guests the Bushwhackers, who are carrying a bowl of sardines. Brother Love tells them the Brainbusters have brains and hygiene, unlike themselves, as he calls them disgusting. Butch then tells Brother Love they do not have a weasel in their corner as Brother Love remains disgusted. Butch eats the rose off of Brother Love’s jacket then the dump sardines all over him. A comedy segment to put over the Bushwhackers gimmick and designed to make Vince laugh at Prichard’s expense.
A trailer for “No Holds Barred” airs.
Greg “The Hammer” Valentine vs. “Rugged” Ronnie Garvin
On commentary, Jesse is irate over Hogan invading “his” territory of Hollywood. Loser of this match will be forced to retire. Valentine beats on Garvin to start. Garvin fights back with chops and takes him down as that gets two. They slug it out until Garvin gets a nearfall off of a sunset flip. Garvin lays into Valentine with more chops after getting two with a rollup. Elbow drop gets two. They knock each other down then Valentine heads up top but Garvin slams him off. Garvin picks him up but Valentine uses a small package then grabs the tights for the win (3:27). After the match, Schiavone interviews Hart and Valentine at ringside as Valentine gloats about putting Garvin into retirement and how he is another name on his list of victims.
Thoughts: Good action here. However, the crowd reaction was tepid and Garvin has not been on TV long and not all that over to begin with so the impact was minimal. Anyway, with how this ended, expect the feud to continue.
Fabulous Rougeau Brothers w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Mark Brown & Cougar Jay
The Rougeaus outsmart Jay and take control as we hear from the Rockers in an insert promo as Jannetty calls the Rougeaus “nerds” and how they were kicked out of Canada as Raymond wins the match with a dropkick (1:21).
Thoughts: More fuel for the Rockers/Rougeaus feud.
Mooney is again in the Event Center to hype up the 5/6 Nashville show. Demolition hypes up their match against the Twin Towers while Ted DiBiase runs down Jake Roberts.
Next week, we will see Jake Roberts vs. Ted DiBiase and we hear comments from both men. Also in action will be Hercules, the Honky Tonk Man, and the Brainbusters.
Final Thoughts: Besides the Garvin/Valentine stuff nothing else of note happened. The show was dull as a result.
