Canadian Promotion

By Scott Keith on November 20, 2016

Hey Scott,

Love the show. Last night I got to thinking how the US, Japan and Mexico all have major promotions and TV shows that you can see in other countries. NJPW, WWE, AAA. Why isn’t there a Canadian company that big? Not enough towns can’t be the answer, there’s all those hockey towns. Is it the WWE just owns all the crowds? Has anyone ever tried and failed to make a Canadian National promotion?

You can’t tour Canada unless you’re already a national promotion, the population is just too widely distributed. Hell, WWE barely even runs shows up here anymore because it’s too much of an expense even for them. For example, in Western Canada there’s basically six major cities — Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg. To get from one of them to the next nearest one is, at best, a 3-4 hour drive, and that’s assuming it’s not brutally cold and icy. It’s not like when you run the New York area and can hit five or six smaller stops outside of the main city. There’s Saskatoon, then NOTHING for hours, then Regina, then NOTHING, then Winnipeg. A promoter would be better off just running specific cities, which is why we had Stampede Wrestling and the Montreal promotions and the Tunneys all as individual promoters.
