Starrcade ’97 Finish
By Scott Keith on November 19, 2016
Scott,
I know this has been beaten to death for years but after watching the Sting: Into The Light doc,I’m even more confused.
Did WCW really get to Sting-Hogan at Starrcade ’97 without booking the ending until the afternoon of the show?! Also, why did Sting turn up out of tune and nervy too, something he himself admits on the doc?
Is this a rare case of Hogan being justified in using his pull to change/amend/kind of do a happy ending?
The line of reasoning from Bischoff and the other WCW guys has always been that Sting was deep into drugs at that point and hadn’t worked out for a while, which meant that somehow he was unable to be World champion because he looked like a normal human being. Since Hulk wouldn’t leave the house without doing 100 sets of crunches and tanning for 4 hours, in his mind that meant the fans wouldn’t accept Sting as champion. This is of course all bullshit. As for the finish, yes, the logistics of Bret interfering and such weren’t hammered out until really close to the show, although everyone knew what the actual finish had to be from the start.
