Random Stonecold face turn question

By Scott Keith on November 17, 2016

Hey Scott,

For some reason I remember on RAW in 97, probably a month or so after Bret and Austin did the double turn and then the rematch at the next PPV, there was an interview where Vince brought up all the Austin signs in the crowd and Austin said something along the lines of "I don’t know what you are all cheering for, you didn’t do nothing"… it seemed odd, because they were clearly positioning him as the babyface in the feud (at least in America). Do you think this was just part of keeping Austin more of a tweener or were they actually trying to get people to boo Austin because an 11-year-old Roman Reigns was clearly the man they should cheer for (as it has been forever).

Austin had a lot of wiggle room on his promos, and I think that might have been him keeping the edge on his character. He was always a reluctant babyface at best, mostly out to maintain his own interests rather than teaming with other babyfaces and making saves for other people. That’s why he was so awesome.
