1992 non-televised title changes in WWE
By Scott Keith on November 5, 2016
With the WWE promoting long title reigns over the last few years (Nikki Bella followed by Charlotte; New Day,even the Miz talking about the length of his current IC reign) and reading the write-ups of past Observer newsletters, it made me think about all of the WWE title changes in 1992. Unfortunately, 5 of the 12 title changes didn’t happen on TV. Was this a concerted effort by WWE to boost house shows or was this more reflective of WWE changing direction throughout the year? I’ve always assumed that Bret losing to the Mountie on a house show was to protect him so fans didn’t see him lose. The tag title switch on Challenge was memorable since they simulcast it on Superstars.
WWE Title:
1. Flair – Royal Rumble
2. Savage – Wrestlemania
3. Flair – not on tv
4. Bret Hart – not on tv
IC Title:
1. Mountie – not on TV
2. Roddy Piper – Royal Rumble
3. Bret Hart – Wrestlemania
4. Bulldog – Summerslam
5. Shawn Michaels – SNME
Tag Team Titles:
1. Money Inc – not on TV
2. Natural Disasters – not on TV
3. Money Inc – Challenge
(next 3 title changes happened at house shows in 1993)
It was just a combination of circumstances, not any concerted effort or change in direction. The company was in such chaos around that time that they weren’t thinking much past keeping Vince out of jail anyway. Later on you’d get stuff like the Razor/Jarrett IC title switches at house shows in Quebec where they were trying to boost business, but mostly the stuff in 92 was like "We want to switch the title RIGHT NOW and there’s a show tonight" and that was that.
