Town-killing shows
By Scott Keith on November 4, 2016
Scott,
At the end of your HIAC review you said something along the lines of "way to kill off Boston." It got me thinking, were there any other shows that had such a detrimental effect on a city/market? Obvious answer is Starrcade 87/Chicago, but were there any others?
Montreal is another big one, although in the long run that actually destroyed Western Canada more than Quebec. With the departures, deaths and de-pushes of all the top Canadian stars, Edmonton and Calgary went from guaranteed sellouts for TV tapings to drawing maybe 2000 people for a house show, and that’s with them only coming once every year. Here in Saskatoon we haven’t even had a house show since the Summer of Punk.
Another case is Dallas in the late 80s, as the death of World Class and the scandals around the Von Erichs pretty much left the territory as scorched earth. The WWF couldn’t draw with Kerry there in 1990, and in fact it would become a legendary sore spot for them that they couldn’t run TV there due to small crowds, until finally the Attitude Era cleansed away whatever hurt feelings were left from the WCCW area.
