WWF Superstars of Wrestling – March 18th, 1989

By Brian Bayless on November 1, 2016

March 18, 1989

From the Broome County Arena in Binghamton, NY

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week will be the Ultimate Warrior, The Rockers, Mr. Perfect, and the Powers of Pain. Plus, we will see the Brutus Beefcake vs. Rick Rude match from “Saturday Night’s Main Event” along with Elizabeth’s decision on whose corner she will be in at WrestleMania V.

Ultimate Warrior vs. Joe Milano

Warrior beats on Milano as we hear from Rick Rude in an insert promo as he tells Warrior come WrestleMania V, he will be the “Ultimate Champion.” Back to the match as Warrior boots Milano down then poses on the middle rope. Warrior winds up to hit a clothesline then puts Milano away with the press slam/splash combo (2:20).

Thoughts: Quick win for the Warrior as his match against Rude at WrestleMania has been built up on TV primarily with Rude insert promos. It was a better choice letting Rude speak more while keeping Warrior mysterious and saving us from his nonsense.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We get footage from “Saturday Night’s Main Event” where Elizabeth states she will be in a neutral corner at WrestleMania V.

Powers of Pain w/ Mr. Fuji vs. George Skaaland & Tony Roy

Jesse asks Vince if George is related to Arnold as Vince thinks he might be. It was his legitimate son and he had a terrible look. The Barbarian beats him down as Demolition is in an insert promo as they warn the Powers of Pain about coming after them. Roy tags and gets destroyed until the Powers of Pain put him away with the Doomsday Device (2:22).

Thoughts: The Powers of Pain/Demolition feud was past its expiration date at this point and really there was no need to hype up the match any longer.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to talk about WrestleMania V. We hear from various competitors as they hype up the matches.

King Haku w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Tommy Causey

Causey tries to work the arm but Haku quickly overpowers him then gets the win with a thrust kick (1:17).

Thoughts: Brief win for Haku as the announcers talked about Heenan’s match with the Red Rooster at WrestleMania V.

We get comments from Hillbilly Jim, who “bets the farm” that Hulk Hogan will beat Randy Savage at WrestleMania V. Good thing they brought him back on TV for that.

The Rockers vs. Iron Mike Sharpe & Mitch Casey

The Rockers use their speed to take control early on in the match. We hear from Slick and the Twin Towers as they run down the Rockers to hype up their match at WrestleMania. Casey tags and lands a few pathetic forearm smashes but ducks his head and gets kicked in the face. The Rockers beat on Casey then hit Sharpe with a double dropkick before putting Casey away with a double fist drop from the top rope (3:13).

Thoughts: The Rockers looked good as they are the most exciting team in the promotion. The fans love them and they are quite refreshing compared to the usual dull teams we were getting before them.

Mooney is back in the Event Center. He runs down the WrestleMania V card.

Nelson Veilleux vs. Mr. Perfect

Perfect takes control as we hear from the Blue Blazer in an insert promo as he talks about their upcoming match at WrestleMania. Veilleux hits a pair of slams but whiffs on a dropkick as Perfect hammers away. He hits Veilleux with a missile dropkick then gets the win with a Perfect Plex (3:19).

Thoughts: Blazer’s insert promos are not good at all as there is virtually zero excitement for this match at WrestleMania, even if they are both excellent in the ring.

Run DMC tell us about the WrestleMania rap.

Brother Love Show guest Red Rooster. Rooster is cackling as Brother Love calls him an idiot for leaving Bobby Heenan as he has limited size, strength, and ability. Rooster said he left Heenan because he is a weasel who takes credit for everything but at WrestleMania V, he will teach Heenan how to lose. Rooster had some really corny material to work with here.

WrestleMania V Report with Gene Okerlund. We hear from Hogan as he admits Savage has been very good at lying and deceiving with his edited footage but now, he boxed himself in as the Hulkamaniacs saw the truth. Hogan calls Savage a liar and that now he is the one with the lust in his eyes because he could never be as good as him. We then hear from Savage as he says the difference between Hogan and himself is that Hogan needs support while he does not need anyone and calls the Hulkamaniacs “Pukeamaniacs” then calls out Elizabeth for only having one job, which is to take the belt from the referee and give it to him after he wins. Savage then tells Hogan he will never be the champion again. After that, we hear from fans as they give their opinions on who will win the WrestleMania V World Title match. This really was one of the best feuds in wrestling history. The build to this match was just tremendous and both men, particularly Savage, were top notch.

The Brutus Beefcake vs. Rick Rude match from “Saturday Night’s Main Event” is joined in progress.

Mooney is back in the Event Center. We hear from more WrestleMania V competitors as they hype up the show.

Next week in action we will see the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, Jim Duggan, and Ted DiBiase. Plus, Hulk Hogan will be a guest on the Brother Love Show and we will also get comments from Randy Savage.

Final Thoughts: The WrestleMania V hype is in overdrive but at this point, its mostly just random matches that have been built up through insert promos rather than a bunch of good feuds. The Mega Powers stuff is all-time great material but the Tag Team Title feud is stale and Jake vs. Andre is all about a potential Andre vs. Studd feud that the fans do not seem to care much about. However, its just one more week of TV until the PPV show after that we can look forward to establishing more TV feuds.
