Blog Question: What if it was Tony?
By Scott Keith on October 30, 2016
Hey Scott,
Watched the Bischoff documentary on the network and saw his unlikely rise to top as executive producer of WCW. My question is what if it had been Tony Schiavone in that role as had been rumored? He obviously excelled as an announcer back then but he seemed to lose passion for the business in later years and is now totally out of wrestling. Is there any feeling that he would have done a good job or terrible job at that time? It seems there certainly wouldn’t have been a Nitro or nWo but maybe a more consistent (if smaller based), sports-driven product.
I think that sounds right. Tony produced the TV shows for years, so it’s not like he didn’t have lots of experience with the product, but it was really the Hail Mary pass of WCW Nitro that ignited them. I also don’t feel like Tony would have brought in Hulk Hogan. I feel like Tony would have done a competent job and then joined the list of corporate victims after a couple of forgettable years.
