WWF Main Event – February 3rd, 1989
By Brian Bayless on October 3, 2016
February 3, 1989
From the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
The show starts off with Vince narrating a video package of the Mega Powers/Twin Towers feud to hype the main event.
Okerlund is backstage with Slick & the Twin Towers. Slick tells us the law of wrestling dynamics and that is three men will always beat two men. Bossman then tells the Mega Powers they have the right to suffer and feel pain as they head to the ring.
We then get a music video of the Mega Powers set to the tune “You’re a Friend of Mine” by Jackson Browne & Clarence Clemons. After that airs, Jesse screams at Vince for doctoring footage to not include the tension between the team.
The Mega Powers & Elizabeth are now backstage with Okerlund. Hogan puts over the love they all have, especially between Savage & Elizabeth. Hogan says love will lead the Mega Powers to victory. Okerlund then asks Savage the thoughts he had when Bossman grabbed Elizabeth. Savage says they both felt the pain but tonight, they will take the Twin Towers down. The Mega Powers appear to be on the same page here.
Twin Towers w/ Slick vs. Mega Powers w/ Elizabeth
Both teams are huddling before the bell rings. Bossman wants Hogan and Savage obliges as Bossman rakes Hogan across the eyes. Hogan fights back then decks Slick off of the apron. He sends Bossman outside after an atomic drop as the crowd goes nuts while the Mega Powers celebrate together as they are showing unity to begin the match. Bossman knees Hogan in the gut but Hogan comes back with ten turnbuckle smashes. Hogan sets up for the big boot but Bossman rolls outside. Savage then hits Bossman from behind as the fans chant along with the referee’s count. Akeem tags in now but Hogan remains as Jesse calls him out for taking all of the glory. Hogan stuns Akeem then tags out as Savage hits a flying double axe handle. Hogan is back in and he even hits the double axe handle but Akeem rakes his eyes then hammers away. Bossman tags and clotheslines Hogan before hitting a piledriver but does not go for the cover. The Towers work over Hogan’s back for a bit but Hogan dumps Bossman outside and hammers away. Slick grabs Hogan’s leg as he went inside as the Towers are back in control. Bossman gets two with a spinebuster as the crowd rallies behind Hogan, who fights back and makes the tag. Savage runs wild on Akeem until Slick hits him with his cane from behind as the ref was tied up. The Towers rough up Savage and toss him outside as Elizabeth helps roll him back inside but Akeem tosses him right back out and on top of Elizabeth as they are both out. Hogan runs to their aid as Savage gets to his feet then sees his wife out cold and points at Hogan while clenching his other fist but Akeem grabs Savage and brings him inside. Dr. Hogan listens for a heartbeat and carries Elizabeth in his arms and takes her backstage on the verge of tears as Savage gets beat down. Hogan places Elizabeth on a stretcher and walks with the medical staff as he is begging for help and screaming for the doctor, even saying “Randy didn’t mean it” as we go to break. The action returns as the Towers continue to beat on Savage, who is alone in the ring. The camera cuts backstage as Hogan is holding Elizabeth’s hand, thanking god that she is alive. Elizabeth asks for Savage as Hogan tells her he’s still in the ring. Hogan then starts running after Elizabeth wanted him out there as Jesse tells us all how Elizabeth was a detriment to the Mega Powers. Hogan is on the apron now as Savage is in trouble. Savage rolls away from a splash then hits a flying double axe handle. Savage does not tag out but instead tosses the Mega Powers outside. Hogan sticks is hand out for a tag so Savage responds by slapping him across the face then heads outside. Savage heads up the aisle and swats the fans hands away. Savage heads back to ringside to grab his belt then leaves as the Towers beat on Hogan. Akeem gets two off of a splash but Hogan hulks up then hits a big boot and follows with the leg drop for the win (22:00) ***. After the match, Bossman attacks Hogan and tries to cuff him but Hogan’s ends up cuffing Bossman & Slick together then leaves. Hogan then yells for Savage, who is with Elizabeth. Savage is saying how he is #1 and tells Elizabeth it is Hogan’s fault she got hurt. Hogan arrives as Savage tells him Hulkamania is in the past and if he wants a title shot, he can face him like a man. Savage then accuses Hogan of having eyes for Elizabeth then acts like he is leaving. Hogan asks Elizabeth to talk some sense into Savage, who then blindsides Hogan with a belt shot. Elizabeth heads to Hogan and lays on top while crying as Savage tosses her off and attacks Hogan some more until Brutus Beefcake and a few officials run-in to break things up.
Thoughts: This is a tough match to rate. Most of the in-ring stuff was not shown but all of the backstage segments were done well and the angle was molten hot. Sure, Hogan’s acting was not very good at all but this was over as fuck as Savage’s jealously of Elizabeth was too much to overcome and it cost him his team with Hogan. Plus, Savage also had a legitimate beef as Hogan left him to get beat on by the Twin Towers to check on Elizabeth.
Hercules vs. “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil
Hercules attacks DiBiase before he enters the ring. He then clotheslines DiBiase to the floor and tosses Virgil off of the top rope. Hercules slingshots DiBiase back inside and hits a press slam before sending DiBiase out with an atomic drop as Vince tells us they will try to get an interview with Hogan after this match. DiBiase yanks Hercules outside and hammers away before they head back into the ring. DiBiase hits a clothesline and a pair of fist drops as that gets two. Hercules blocks a suplex and hits one of his own as both men are down. DiBiase rakes the eyes then catches Hercules with a boot on a charge. Hercules fights back and hits a powerslam but DiBiase side steps a charge. Virgil then wraps the chain on the turnbuckle pad but it backfires as Hercules smashes DiBiase’s head. Hercules then picks up DiBiase for the backbreaker but Virgil distracts the referee. The ref then heads over to take the chain off and that allows Virgil to trip Hercules as DiBiase rolls him up and grabs the tights for the win (7:12:) **1/2.
Thoughts: I thought the match was solid and DiBiase bumped like a madman for Hercules. However, there was not much interest in this match due to the crowd exhausting themselves over the Mega Powers breakup.
Okerlund is backstage in the first aid room with Hogan and Beefcake. Hogan has an ice pack on his head then drops it as grunts in pain. He then gets up and screams “Randy” as he runs out of the room.
After the announcers recap the show, we are shown Hogan screaming for Savage as he’s going nuts tossing stuff around and even threatening the Rockers and the Hart Foundation as the show ends.
Final Thoughts: This was one hell of a show. The Mega Powers broke up and with Savage telling Hogan to face him like a man if he wants a title shot, it certainly sets up the two for a future title match. Also, on 1/28, Trump Plaza was advertising the Clash of the Mega Powers as the main event at WrestleMania V so for some, they already knew the direction of where WrestleMania V was headed. The Mega Powers breakup was great stuff though and a must-watch show.
