Sami Callihan vs. Pentagon Jr.
Pentagon was a surprise opponent here for Callihan, who takes Pentagon out with a tope before he even entered the ring. Pentagon fights back then takes Callihan out with a tope con hilo. They trade chops as the crowd likes Pentagon. They head inside where Pentagon hits three straight Slingblades for a two count. Callihan dodges a charge in the corner then comes back with a face wash. Callihan taunts Pentagon, who ends up turning him inside out with a chop. Pentagon gets the crowd to chant “Cero Miedo” but Callihan boots him in the gut and hits a gutbuster for two. Pentagon floats over in the corner and gets a nearfall with a lungblower. They fight up top until Callihan tries a sunset bomb then kicks Pentagon off of the top. Callihan gets two with a Liger Bomb then puts on the Stretch Muffler as Pentagon makes it to the ropes. Pentagon is on the apron where he ducks a clothesline then boots Callihan off of the apron. He tries a dive but Callihan cuts him off then gets two with a Death Valley Driver. Both men are down then Pentagon is up first and hits a chop before almost getting the win with a pumphandle driver. Pentagon hits a super kick but Callihan yells “fuck you.” Callihan spits at Pentagon after a second kick then gets dropped after a third. Pentagon then uses an armbreaker before hitting a package piledriver for the win (6:19) **1/2.
Thoughts: Fun match. It was short but all action. The crowd was super into Pentagon here.
Glen Joseph, co-owner of PROGRESS Wrestling, is in the ring. He said tonight the PROGRESS Title will be a World Title then puts over the talent in England while proving all of his doubters wrong.
PROGRESS World Title Match: Will Ospreay vs. “The Villain” Marty Scurll (c)
These two trade off working the arm to start in a smooth sequence. Ospreay handsprings out of a hurricarana to trigger a reversal sequence that ends with Ospreay bowing after he did a backflip after Scurll pulled up on a dropkick attempt. Scurll uses an eye poke as that also triggers a reversal sequence, ending with a double bow. Scurll fakes out Ospreay with a chicken wing and kicks him in the shins. Scurll then blocks a handspring headscissor attempt with a kick as he takes control. Scurll targets the arm then sends Ospreay out but he landed on the apron. Ospreay kicks Scurll but misses an inverted 450 as Scurll got his feet up. Scurll catches Ospreay with a running kick from the apron then goes back to working the arm after Ospreay rolls inside. Scurll now targets the legs but Ospreay comes back with a jawbreaker. Ospreay fires away but Scurll cuts him off with a knee smash. Ospreay gets whipped against the ropes but turns that into a springboard roundhouse kick as both men are down. Ospreay hits a top rope forearm smash then gets two with a standing Sky Twister splash. He measures Scurll, who blocks a flipping DDT as Opsreay counters that with a rollup for two. Scurll cuts off Ospreay on the top with an uppercut but Ospreay slips down and tucks Scurll’s head underneath the turnbuckle and hits a super kick for a two count. Scurll fight back by breaking the fingers of Ospreay. He hits a pair of clothesline then after that connects with a knee lift. Scurll uses mounted punches in the corner. Ospreay once again tucks his head but Scurll catches Ospreay with a mule kick. They are now trading moves at an insane pace as both men are down after Ospreay connected with a spinning heel kick. They get and start trading chops as Scurll wins that battle. Scurll eats boot on a charge but returns the favor and tucks Opsreay’s head underneath the turnbuckle and hits a super kick. He calls out for the chicken wing but Ospreay breaks out and hits an enziguiri. Ospreay heads up top after a running shooting star press but Scurll turned a Phoenix Splash into a small package for two. Scurll slaps Ospreay across the face but Ospreay hulks up and starts peppering Scurll with strikes. Scurll then comes back with more finger breaking but misses a charge and falls out to the floor. Ospraey flies out with a Fosbury Flop then heads back inside for a suplex but Scurll counters that into the chicken wing then kicks Ospreay in the mid-section and gets the win via submission as he retains the belt (16:26) ****.
Thoughts: Awesome match. Both of these guys have had an excellent 2016 and are two names all wrestling fans should keep an eye on going forward. It was also cool to see the PROGRESS Title become a World Title as well.
Jake Manning & Zane Riley vs. Chuck Taylor & Colt Cabana
The gimmick with Manning & Riley is that Manning is the “man” scout while Riley is the “cub” scout. The crowd chants for Cabana, who whacks Riley in the ass as he was standing on the apron. Manning then stalls in the corner as he reads through his manual. Riley gets tagged in and takes off his shirt to reveal a lot of flab. Riley poses on the top rope after they collide and we get some more stalling. Cabana takes Riley down after working the arm before he heads over to taunt Manning. Cabana gets hit from behind after some taunting but comes back with a headscissor takedown. Cabana slaps Riley in the ass again as Manning makes a blind tag then they work a comedy spot where Manning and Cabana keep on having to do drop downs as Riley runs the ropes until he is exhausted and collides with his partner. Taylor tags and stomps Manning in the corner then lands on his feet after a moonsault and plays possum as he surprises Manning with a small package for two. Cabana & Taylor use quick tags to cut off the ring but Manning blocks a baseball slide then ties up Taylor in the bottom rope, you know to sell his gimmick of tying knots as a scout leader. Taylor finally gets out then Manning dropkicks him to the floor where Riley roughs him up. Back inside, Manning targets the neck and back of Taylor. The scouts neutralize Taylor in their corner then Manning gets two with a back elbow smash. Manning works a chinlock as the crowd rallies behind Taylor. Riley tags as Taylor fights back and hits a missile dropkick as both men are down. Taylor finally makes the tag as Cabana runs wild on Manning. He cleans house with bionic elbows then Riley breaks up a pin attempt as the match breaks down. The Scouts come back with double thumbs in the ass leading to back suplexes as Riley sucks his thumb. Cabana gets hit with a cannonball from Riley then makes the tag as Taylor chops both guys until getting caught with a 3D for a nearfall. Taylor is set up for a double superplex but Cabana sends Riley to the floor then picks up Manning for the Doomsday Device and the win (13:25) *1/2.
Thoughts: Cabana looked decent here but the Scout gimmick stuff really came off as Bush League and Riley was bad in this match.
Crazy Mary Dobson vs. Tessa Blanchard
Dobson actually worked as “Sarah Dobson” in a match against Alexa Bliss on NXTThe announcers put over the womens wrestling renaissance going on as these to go back-and-forth. Dobson hits Blanchard with a cartwheel knee drop for two then gets nearfalls with a headbutt and a basement dropkick. Dobson stays in control until Blanchard comes back with a Russian leg sweep as both women are down. They trade forearm smashes until Blanchard takes Dobson down twice before hitting a reverse neckbreaker. Blanchard gets two with a bulldog but Dobson comes back with a headbutt. Dobson gets two off of a scoop slam then they have a reversal sequence ending with Blanchard getting two with the DDT. Dobson flips out of a move then tries a go-behind but Blanchard is able to hit a slingshot back suplex for the win (4:53) *.
Thoughts: Dobson showed a bit of promise here but Tessa has a long way to go and these two worked a sloppy match.
Lucha Underground announcer Melissa Santos introduces the opponents for the six-man tag.
Jack Evans & Extreme Tiger & Bestia 666 vs. Aero Star & Drago & Octagon Jr.
Evans taunts the crowd and his opponents before the match. Octagon catches Tiger with a dropkick before the bell. They go back-and-forth before ending in a stalemate. Bestia and Drago are in and trade off moves then the match breaks down. Drago gets hit with leg drops by everyone from the opposing team. Evans gets two with a Phoenix Splash then the match breaks down again as Octagon hits a tope then Aero Star flies all the way into the crowd after an insane tope con hilo as the crowd goes nuts. In the ring, Evans breaks up a cradle from Drago and puts him in the tree-of-woe and hits a stomp from the top as Aero Star breaks up that pin attempt. Octagon hits Bestia with the 619 then hits him with knees to the chest after having him up in the muscle buster position. Extreme Tiger is in and drapes Octagon over the guardrail before hitting a top rope leg drop in an insane spot. Aero Star flies out with a springboard flip dive. Back inside, Drago hits Evans with a swinging DDT from Bestia’s shoulders then flies out with a tope con hilo. Octagon and Evans are left in the ring. Octagon misses a Phoenix Splash then Evans sets up for the 630 but Octagon gets his knees up. Evans nearly gets the win with a backslide then they trade kicks until Octagon gets the win with a flipping uranage (10:35) ***1/2. After the match, fans toss money in the ring, which is a sign of respect in Mexico. They also get a standing ovation, with Evans yelling at the crowd that he still hates them.
Thoughts: This was a blast to watch. Aero Star really puts his body on the line with his dives and there were a ton of cool moves in this match. Extreme Tiger (Tigre Uno to TNA fans) had a good showing here.
Jeff & Karen Jarrett come out to the ring for the ten-man tag. Jarrett is sporting the Bullet Club logo on the back of his ring jacket. He grabs the mic and talks about facing Joey Ryan’s team, making fun of his “You Beep” sponsorship as the crowd chants “You Porn” at Jarrett, who calls them all classless. The crowd starts a “yes” chant as Karen tells them to shut up. He then brings up his team as the crowd chants “shut the fuck up.” Karen tells one fan to “go to Weight Watchers” after calling them an asshole. After Team Jarrett comes out, Ryan tries to do his gimmick of giving way his blowpop but Jarrett stops him and gives a shove. After that, Ryan introduces his team. Tons of bad comedy here but the crowd was rabid in their hatred of Jarrett.
Team Jarrett (Jeff Jarrett w/ Karen & Sonjay Dutt & Brian Myers & Luke Hawx & Jessica Havok) vs. Team Ryan (Joey Ryan & Candice LeRae & Sinestro & Shane Strickland & Tommy Dreamer)
Sinestro is a masked guy with the Lucha Underground logo on his chest as he is being billed as someone who just signed with the company. Dreamer then takes the blowpop and shoves it in his pants before putting it in his mouth, leading to “you sick fuck” chants. The Jarretts piss off the crowd by making out too. Match starts with Strickland and Dutt working a fast-paced sequence ending in a stalemate as their timing was off at times. Myers and Sinestro tag in as Sinestro uses a headscissors and a dropkick then starts to remove his mask, revealing him as Matt Striker. Myers picks him up for a slam as Jarrett mocks Striker on the apron. Havok tags in as Striker reapplies the mask and tags in LeRae. Havok gets the best of her and tags Hawx but LeRae rolls away and tags Ryan. Hawx knocks down Ryan but runs into an elbow. Ryan hits an inverted atomic drop and a dropkick then the crowd starts a “cock” chant. Jarrett and Dreamer tag in as Jarrett does a lot of stalling before grabbing the mic. The crowd chants “shut the fuck up” at Jarrett as he says nothing of note. Jarrett then takes the mic again and runs down his opponents for being garbage. Ryan now grabs a mic but it turns out to be broken so we finally get Jarrett and Dreamer locking up. The crowd now chants for Kurt Angle as there is far too much stalling going on here. Dreamer tells Jarrett he started the crowd riot with his “shitty promo” and Southern-style as he tells Jarrett to fight him like a man or else he will open up the gates and let 2,000 fans “Butt fuck” him. Dreamer beats on Jarrett then on Dutt. Ryan tags in and scares off Dutt with his junk as the crowd wants him to touch his dick. Dutt does but Jarrett attacks Ryan from behind. Myers tags and hits a suplex as the heels are cutting off the ring. Ryan finally tags out to Strickland, who runs wild on Hawx. He knocks Hawx off of the apron and takes him out with a Fosbury Flop. Back inside, Dutt breaks up a pin attempt as the match breaks down. They set up for the world’s slowest tower of doom spot that sees Havok take just about everyone down. Now, they work a ten-man submission spot as Dreamer puts Havok in the claw. Everyone trades moves as that ends with Karen slapping Dreamer in the face. Dreamer sets up for a piledriver but Jarrett hits him with the Stroke but instead of celebrating, LeRae starts beating him in the corner. She hits the ballsplex but Myers and Dutt hit a double super kick and get the win (23:18) 1/2*.
Thoughts: I thought this was absolutely terrible. The work was bad, most of the match was stalling and Jarrett pulling his antics, and it had no business going this long. The humor reminded me off the stuff we saw in TNA’s infancy during the weekly PPV era. Maybe some of you that have seen like the humor but I thought it was awful.
OMEGA World Championship: Lance Storm w/ Missy Hyatt vs. Matt Hardy (c) w/ Reby Sky
The crowd taunts Matt by chanting for his brother Jeff. They start out trading standing holds as Lance is still in really good shape. Lance takes Matt down with a drop toehold and works a front facelock on the mat. Matt backs Lance into the corner then hammers away. Lance comes back with a dropkick as Matt retreats to the outside. The crowd taunts Matt for being fat as he re-enters the ring. Matt hits a corner clothesline but Storm comes back with another dropkick for two. Lance beats on Matt in the corner then gets two off of a Russian leg sweep. Matt breaks out of a chinlock with a jawbreaker but Lance is able to toss Matt outside. Lance takes out Matt with a pescado as the crowd applauds then he heads back inside, where Matt cuts him off. Matt gets two with a reverse neckbreaker then hits a few leg drops after that. Lance fights back but Matt catches him in a sleeper hold. Lance reverses but Matt breaks it up with a back suplex as both men are down. They get up and trade punches as Lance wins that battle then follows with a leg lariat for a nearfall. Matt fights out of a half crab then catches Lance with a boot. Matt drops an elbow to the back of Lance’s neck but spends too much time taunting the crowd and walks into a super kick as that gets two. Matt rolls out to the apron and they fight over a suplex as Matt floats over then hits the Side Effect for two. Matt sets up for the Twist of Fate but Lance ducks underneath and rolls through with the half crab. Reby distracts the ref then Lance stops the hold but gets hit with a low blow. Matt hits the Twist of Fate but Lance kicks out. Lance then is able to apply the half crab but Reby slides the title into the ring. Matt then took off his boot and hit Lance in the throat as that gets the win (10:49) **1/4. After the match, Missy gets involved after Matt and Reby get on Lance but she accidentally eats a super kick from Lance. Missy gets up and asks where she is and asks Lance who the hell he is and wonders where John Tatum and the Von Erichs are.
Thoughts: The match itself was competently worked and Storm looks great for his age (47). However, the crowd was dead and the end looked pretty bad to the honest. The bit with Missy after the match was funny and I believe this was billed as her retirement.
Brian Cage & Chris Hero & Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Ricochet & Matt Sydal & Rey Mysterio
Ricochet and Sabre start off the match. They work some nifty sequences then tag out as we get Sydal and Hero in the ring. They trade off holds then Cage tags and skies Sydal with a backdrop. Cage hits a delayed vertical suplex and follows with a standing moonsault for two as Ricochet maekes the save. Hero tags and kicks Sydal in the mouth. Sydal stops a turnbuckle smash and comes back with an enziguiri before tagging Mysterio, who runs wild until Cage rams him into the post. Cage is now the legal man as he overpowers Mysterio. Hero gets two with a senton as Mysterio is being neutralized in the opposing corner. Sabre and Hero accidentally hit each other then they start fighting as the announcers mentioned how they just fought at the WWN Live Supershow earlier that day. Mysterio takes out Sabre then hits a swinging DDT on Hero before tagging out. Ricochet runs wild now then he works a sequence with Sabre and attempts the People’s Moonsault but Sabre captures him with an armbreaker. The match breaks down now as Ricochet gets beaten down, with Cage nearly putting him away with an F5. Ricochet catches Cage with an enziguiri after flipping out of a pumphandle then tags Sydal as he gets two with a hurricarana. Cage then catches Sydal with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Cage now has all three of his opponents in the fireman’s carry position and tosses them down. He places Sydal up top but Sydal escapes from a superplex as the match breaks down again with everyone down after hitting high-impact moves. Sydal takes down Hero and Cage then places Hero up top and hits a hurricarana. Sydal hits a standing shooting star press then tags Rey, who hits a splash off of his partners’ shoulders as that gets two. The crowd starts up a “This is awesome” chant as Hero sets Rey up for the 619 but gets cut off with a double super kick. Mysterio then hits the 619 and Ricochet & Sydal follow with a double Benadryller on Hero. Ricochet takes out Cage with a Fosbury Flop as Mysterio hits Hero with the the frog splash for the win (21:19) ****. After the match, the crowd gives them all a standing ovation.
Thoughts: Really fun match. Ricochet and Sabre worked great together and everyone got a chance to shine. Not as good as the six-man tag at Mercury Rising but still really fun to watch.
Monster’s Ball Match: Andrew Everett vs. AR Fox vs. Trevor Lee w/ Shane Helms vs. Pentagon Jr. vs. Abyss vs. Jeff Hardy
The match starts off with a giant brawl. Lee & Everett beat on Fox, who comes back with a double Ace Crusher. Fox ducks a double clothesline but eats a double super kick. On the outside, Hardy and Abyss set up a table as Lee & Everett follow. Fox then takes everyone out with topes and grabs the ladder and makes a bridge between the guardrail and ring apron. Pentagon takes him out with a trash barrel shot then cleans house in the ring. Everett kicks Pentagon then gets two off of a Falcon Arrow. Abyss brings “Janice” into the ring but Lee & Everett beat him down with kendo sticks. Everett then takes Lee down with a hurricarana but Lee comes back with a double stomp then kicks the trash can off of Abyss’ head. Everett dropkicks Hardy in the middle of a springboard move then flies out with a springboard shooting star press. Fox then hits everyone else with a springboard implosion on the outside. Fox and Everett crawl inside and battle it out but Helms comes in to chokeslam Everett and Fox as his music plays but Abyss blocks that. Everett tries a springboard move but Abyss grabs his throat and tosses him off the top rope and through the table on the floor. Back inside, Fox hits Pentagon with a cutter and heads up top but Pentagon knocks him off as Fox falls onto the ladder bridge. Abyss then hits Pentagon with the Black Hole Slam and dumps a bag filled with thumbtacks onto the mat. Abyss and Lee fight up top as Lee hits a sunset bomb but Abyss did not land on the thumbtacks like he was supposed to as he rolls outside. Lee flies out with a tope to take out Abyss as Hardy sets up a ladder in the corner. Pentagon heads over as they trade strikes for a bit. Hardy gets two after a flying forearm but Pentagon comes back with three slingblades as that also gets two. Hardy escapes from a package piledriver attempt and hits a Twist of Fate then climbs the ladder for the Swanton Bomb as that gets the win (12:56) ***.
Thoughts: This was fun but it died a bit at the end. Everett and Lee stood out the most and the crowd seemed to like Jeff as it was a decent way to end the show.
Final Thoughts: Overall, this was a decent. Sure, there was some crap but some awesome matches too. WrestleMania weekend had some great wrestling but personally, I’d rather check out the WWN Mercury Rising Super Show.
