DC’s Suicide Squad and a wrestling connection to it?
By Scott Keith on August 7, 2016
in honor of Suicide Squad breaking the DC curse at the box office, just something I want to run by you. Is it just me or did John Byrne (who drew Legends, the Crossover that introduced Ostrander’s SS) basically use Jim Cornette as the basis for Glorious Godfrey’s alter ego G Gordon Godfrey?
Granted he’s a ginger and all, but every time I saw Godfrey in Legends, I kept thinking "that’s Jim Cornette". And given that Amanda Waller was based off of Nell Carter, I have to wonder if Byrne might have been an NWA fanboy and took inspiration from Cornette visually for the character’s re-design
Let’s not declare any curses broken yet. Batman v. Superman was looking good after the first weekend, too, but it needed something like $1 billion worldwide to break even and it never got close. Granted Suicide Squad only needs around $500M with production and advertising factored in and it should make it easily by next weekend, but it’s hardly a test case for DC’s success. I’d say it’s more a wacky outlander like Guardians was for Marvel. Wonder Woman will be the REAL test.
Anyway, I seriously doubt that John Byrne had any exposure to Jim Cornette in 1987. Cornette was not exactly a national figure at that point and Byrne has never shown any connection to wrestling. I’m betting the actual inspiration was an amalgamation of a politician at the time and one of the tabloid news reporters.
