The “he didn’t draw” excuse

By Scott Keith on August 1, 2016

Wrestlers’ pushes & big matches have often been scrapped with the excuse that "they didn’t draw", but aren’t these often shortsighted views? They scrapped Hogan v. Flair for Wrestlemania because the house shows weren’t getting huge numbers, but isn’t it true the business as a whole was down then? Ditto for Sting’s title run in 1990-91. There are several other instances, notwithstanding Diesel’s title reign. Booking plays a major factor too. The Black Scorpion angle certainly didn’t help Sting.

Yeah, but a lot of times when guys get over, they’re just over and immediately boost house show numbers. Flair wasn’t moving numbers in 91 against Hogan, so there was no indication that booking him in the main event of Wrestlemania in that position was going to draw any better. They thought Sid v. Hogan would draw better, so that’s what they went with. Booking can affect it, but look at today: Reigns is just not moving numbers, regardless of whether it’s his own fault or the booking. When you’re hot, you’re hot, and when you’re not, you’re not.
