Shield guys all a flop?
By Scott Keith on July 20, 2016
So, when WWE originally brought in The Shield, it was clear from the very beginning that all three guys were going to get a huge push. All three guys went over pretty much everyone else in the company, sometimes individually, sometimes as a team, and sometimes with one Shield guy beating two guys in a handicap match.
When The Shield split, all three guys continued to get the Jeebus Push. This was most obvious with Roman Reigns(He’s The Guy!), but Rollins and Ambrose also get big pushes.
Since alst year’s WrestleMania, all three Shield guys have held the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. In fact, other than Sheamus’ brief reign, and an HHHH run with the belt, it’s been The Shield guys all the time. And of course, long before that, all three guys, and Reigns in particular, were getting pushed.
And the result has been terrible. Lower ratings every week. Declining business in every measurable way. And it’s not just The Big Dog’s fault. The drop started with Rollins. Reigns continued the downward trend. Some people thought that Ambrose would be the breakout star, but he has seen things fall even further.
The conclusion, and the numbers don’t lie….the three guys who were The Shield suck. Not only aren’t they doing good business, between the three of them, they’re driving more and more people away every week. It’s time for a change. Four years of these three assholes is more than enough. Despite getting rockets strapped to their asses, they make 2001 X-Pac look like a massive draw by comparison. The Shield Experiment has been a complete and utter flop.
Perhaps, but that’s 100% on WWE. Reigns did the best he could with the shitty material given and being put in a position he wasn’t ready to take. Rollins was completely undercut by the Authority nonsense week after week. And Ambrose should NOT have been squashed by Lesnar if he was going to end up as WWE champion two months later.
That being said, it’s true, numbers don’t lie. Reigns didn’t move ratings, and then house show numbers with him on top started driving downwards as well. Ambrose was never really in a position to draw before, and then when he got the title, he flopped there, hard. Those third hour drops are difficult to justify with any reason but "People don’t want to watch him as champion." But hey, a few months ago his spot was looking to be "Comedy jobber", so it’s not like anyone was really expecting Dean to be a long-term World champion anyway. He got the belt, good for him, but he’s not the guy either. The problem is that they’re running out of prospects to BE the guy.
