21st Wrestling Style and Injuries
By Scott Keith on May 19, 2016
Seeing the prospect of Emma and, possibly A J Styles on the shelf, along with all the MIAs from Wrestlemania, it seems self-evident that today’s product is reaping the harvest of an evolution from mat-based ring psychology to the proliferation of high-paced, high-impact spots. Is the genie out of the bottle? Is there any way to re-educated fans and shift the product to a safer in-ring style? Could many of today’s workers even adapt to slower matches built around such mundane things as controlling an opponent with holds and working a body part?
That’s exactly what they’re learning in NXT for the most part. The rash of injuries aren’t due to a hard style in the ring for the most part, they’re due to overly aggressive weight-training and building muscles the wrong way. For the most part, the style is ridiculously safe compared to what it was in the Attitude Era.
