WWE 1997 Questions

> I did not start watching wrestling until 1998, so I decided to watch old Raws/Nitros. I have a few questions related to Raw in 1997.

> 1. Why was Tony Atlas constantly seen during Rocky Maivia matches in 97? I never realized Tony Atlas was in the WWE in 97 at all it seemed out of nowhere.

He wasn’t with the WWF at the time, it was a tie in with Rocky’s dad, who was famously partners with Atlas in the 80s. However, Atlas and Johnson famously hated each other in real life. So it was kind of random and didn’t last anyway.

> 2. Why did Raw have Lucha Libre trio matches and why didn’t they have more? The crowd appeared to get into the high spots, and it was a decent match. It surprised me to see that kind of match on the Raw undercard.

They were trying to duplicate the WCW success with the Cruiserweight division and couldn’t pull it off because Konnan had all the good talent locked up and Vince didn’t understand the style.

> 3. Could the Light Heavyweight Championship have matched the Cruiserweight Championship if given a real chance? They had talented guys like Taka, The Great Sasuke, and Dean Malenko to name a few.

Well they didn’t have Malenko until 2000, but anything can work given proper booking. And yeah, with the MPro crew they could have booked great matches for months, but wanted the stupid direction they went with instead.
