May 28, 1988
From the Entertainment Convention Center in Duluth, MN
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
This week, we will see the Hercules vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan match from the 4/30/88 “Saturday Night’s Main Event.” Also in action will be Jake Roberts, Bad News Brown, Strike Force, Honky Tonk Man, and the Junkyard Dog.
Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Barry Horowitz
Horowitz works the arm as Jesse blames Jake’s wife for starting his feud with Rick Rude. Jake fights back and hits a slam. He then hits the short-armed clothesline before putting Horowitz away with a DDT (1:24). After the match, Jake dumps Damien on top of Horowitz as Vince puts over the recent mean streak displayed by Jake.
Thoughts: The story here remains that Jake has been out for revenge since Rude hit on his wife, showing more aggression than usual and taking out anyone who gets in his way.
WWF Update with Lord Alfred Hayes. This week’s subject is the feud between Ken Patera and Dino Bravo over who is the strongest man. We are then shown the clip from this past episode of “Wrestling Challenge” where Bravo attacked Patera during their tug-of-war battle. They are really trying to push this feud but the fans have not been into it much.
Bad News Brown vs. Mike Richards
Bad News immediately beats down Richards. We then hear from him in an insert promo as he refers to the Hart Foundation as “pantywaists” that wear pink before putting Richards away with the Ghetto Blaster (1:19).
Thoughts: Bad News is in the midst of a strong push at the moment. On commentary, they are making sure to put over how he is a bad ass and they make out the Ghetto Blaster as a deadly finisher. And now, he is apparently feuding with both members of the Hart Foundation.
Jim Neidhart asks us what does Bad News Brown and the WWF Ice Cream Bars have in common? The answer is that Bret and himself will eat them both up.
Strike Force vs. Rick Renslow & Dave Wagner
Strike Force work over Renslow to start. We then get an insert promo from the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers as they put over Strike Force as being a “Fabulous” team and that they have one advantage over them and that is blood is thicker than water. Strike Force now works over Wagner until Santana puts him away with a flying forearm (3:29).
Thoughts: They teased a potential Rougeau vs. Strike Force match here as the Rougeaus keep turning up the insincerity with each passing week.
Gene Okerlund is in the Event Center as he runs down the card for the 6/4/88 Boston Garden show. We hear from Jim Duggan as he hypes up his match against Andre the Giant and from Demolition & Mr. Fuji as they hype up their match against Strike Force & Ultimate Warrior.
Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Brady Boone
Boone takes Honky over with a hiptoss to start. He then hits a slam as Honky rolls outside while Boone does a backflip off of the top rope. Back inside, Boone ducked his head and got booted in the face as we hear an insert promo from Honky, as he talks about how the tune he played on Brutus Beefcake last week was just perfect. Back to the match as Boone misses a corner charge then Honky puts him away with the Shake, Rattle, and Roll (2:25).
Thoughts: The crowd hated Honky as his feud against Beefcake is heating up.
Okerlund is back in the Event Center to talk about the 6/4/88 Boston Garden show. We now hear from the Ultimate Warrior & Strike Force and from Bret Hart as he hypes us his 30 minute time-limit match against Bad News Brown.
Tim Patterson vs. Junkyard Dog
Jesse tries to tell us that Tim Patterson is the son of Pat Patterson as Vince completely ignores him. JYD decks Patterson before taking him down with a clothesline. We get an insert promo from Ron Bass, who tells us that JYD is running scared and he and Miss Betsy are after him. After that, JYD hits the powerslam for the win as Jesse says he knows for sure Tim is Pat Patterson’s kid as that is how he always ended up (flat on his back) while Vince says he does not remember “that guy” (1:28).
Thoughts: They are still pushing the JYD/Bass feud. Jesse’s digs at Pat Patterson here were something else.
Craig DeGeorge welcomes Ted DiBiase and Virgil to the interview platform. He brings up the attack on Savage after he wrestled Virgil last week. DiBiase tells DeGeorge he does not want to hear his WWF-biased opinion and said Virgil was manhandling Savage. DeGeorge asks DiBiase why he stood behind Elizabeth and manhandled here as DiBiase laughs and says he will do whatever he wants to intimidate him and does not care that Savage is a woman because she is in a man’s profession. He then warns Savage the next time he turns around, it will not be a $100 shoved down his throat but rather his fist. DiBiase then warns Savage that once his glory is gone, Elizabeth will be as well, then talks about how he has never lost a woman himself because he has what they want. DiBiase then ends this by suggesting Elizabeth could become the next “Million Dollar Woman.” Tremendous heel promo by DiBiase, who came off as the scum of the earth here. Excellent stuff.
We are then shown the Hercules vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan match from the 4/30/88 “Saturday Night’s Main Event.”
In action next week we will see Rick Rude, The Bolsheviks, Ultimate Warrior, Ted DiBiase, and Brutus Beefcake.
Final Thoughts: Not a whole lot new to this besides the DiBiase interview. They showed the Duggan/Hercules match which was cool if you missed that but nothing else of note really took place.
