1997 WWF Arena Question
By Scott Keith on February 20, 2016
In the past you’ve talked about how, when WCW got hot in the 90s, they still ran smaller venues than they could have because they were booked well in advance. Or how, when the WWF got hot again, they didn’t try running a dome again until 2001 for similar reasons.
So, my question is, in 97 we had the Hart Foundation USA V Canada angle, and a large part of what made that angle so great that summer was that one week they’d do RAW in the States and be heels, and the next week in Canada as triumphant heroes. Did the WWF just luck out with alternating shows from different sides of the border, or did they make a lot of last minute changes to accommodate the angle?
Nope, total fluke. The Calgary PPV arena was booked months in advance, for example, and they basically tailored the booking of the show around where the arena was that week. It was pretty masterful in a lot of ways, especially when they lucked into that super-hot Halifax crowd that one week and then never came back there again for TV for reasons I can’t fathom to this day.
I guess RAW in 97 is next on my review list.
