D Bry’s Lack of Release
By Scott Keith on January 23, 2016
Hi Scott,
I totally get everything about the WWE’s doctor not clearing DB and the reality that he won’t be in the Rumble on Sunday. However, if it’s true, that he’ll never wrestle in WWE again, why not release him? If you buy that he just wants to wrestle wherever they’ll let him (and I think most people do), then I’m sure he’d agree to relinquish any guaranteed money they owe him over the next 2 years. Do they think he’ll accept a non-competitive on-air role? Are they worried about the buy rate ROH would crack with his "return matches" under his real name? Or do even they think there’s a chance he can still go at some point later down the road?
It would be very Vince to use the current exposure (http://tmi.kotaku.com/the-daniel-bryan-dilemma-1754611282, cross-posted all over Gawker for instance) to build an on-air angle, possible including his signing a real-life waiver absolving all responsibility (if such a thing exists) in the middle of the ring to hype fans for it. I know that’s a pipe dream, but it’s still odd that they refuse to release him.
Btw, am I the only one that really misses Shoemaker’s PPV Previews on Grantland a metric ton?
I never really read Grantland that much, but then I’m a not big sports guy anyway.
As for the motivations with Bryan, they still make a lot of money off merchandising him, so I can totally get why they’d keep him around. Plus why hand a top draw to someone who might be a competitor someday? Also, if they are legitimately concerned for his health, releasing him to knowingly go somewhere else to wrestle is just as negligent as letting him wrestle in WWE.
