Taker vs Cena – Will it happen?
By Scott Keith on December 30, 2015
Hi Scott, hope you’re having a good holiday.
Undertaker vs John Cena is a dream Wrestlemania match that I and many others have wanted to see for almost 9 years now, and given all the reports and rumors about it this year, it seems we’re now closer than ever before to actually getting it. My question for you is, what do you believe the chances are of the match happening at Wrestlemania 32?
Personally, I don’t see any other logical opponent for either man.
For Cena, the only other option I’ve heard rumors about is him facing Roman Reigns in a “passing of the torch” match, but I think it would be better to save this for next year. If you look at all the other torch-passing matches that have happened (Andre/Hogan, Hogan/Rock, Rock/Cena), the guy getting the torch had already established himself as the top guy for at least a couple years before the match. Reigns only just won the title, so he should spend at least a year scoring huge wins (namely against Brock and HHH) before finally facing Cena at Mania 33. Yeah I know, SuperReigns is not the most appealing thing to think about, but if they’re serious about making him the face of the company they might as well do it right.
As for Taker, WM32 is in Texas and they want to fill AT&T Stadium, so he needs to be in a marquee match. Let’s look at the options:
1. Sting – injured.
2. Brock – this was the original plan, but they moved it up to Hell in a Cell, where the feud ended very decisively.
3. HHH – already happened 3 times at Wrestlemania.
4. Reigns – makes no sense. He looks to be heading towards a match with HHH and/or Brock.
5. Rock – won’t even be there (or at least won’t be wrestling).
6. Braun Strowman – nowhere near ready for a Mania main event, plus the Wyatts were handily squashed at Survivor Series.
7. Kane – already done twice at Wrestlemania, plus the outcome would be way too predictable.
8. Daniel Bryan – WWE won’t clear him.
9. Orton – injured.
10. Rollins – injured.
The only big name left for Taker to face right now is Cena. It’s a fresh matchup, it’s guaranteed to draw, it’s guaranteed to be a good match, and even with the Streak broken there will be doubt as to who wins.
WWE is in dire straits right now trying to come up with something that will make Wrestlemania 32 “the biggest ever”, and this match is RIGHT THERE. There’s no reason why they shouldn’t do it.
What do you think?
If I was a betting person, I’d bet on seeing it, yes. But with Rock coming in for the show, who knows where things will shake down now. Maybe they’ll just line up all the big stars and have Reigns beat them in a series of matches until everyone cheers Roman?
