Best Path for New Stars

By Scott Keith on December 11, 2015

The consensus appears to be that WWE needs to create new stars that the fans can get behind and invest their emotions into. Well, what is the best way to do that in thwe current landscape. Let’s take 2012 Ryback for example. Clearly, they wanted to go somewhere with the Big Guy. They built him up with jobber squashes, just like in the good old days. Then suddenly he’s facing CM Punk on multiple PPVs in title matches. Is that a case where they jumped a perfectly serviceable timeline with him? Should he have been given the IC title or the US title and defended it successfully for 6 months, building him up even more before the inevitable shot at the big title? Was this a case of too much too soon for Ryback?

So what happens if they decide to take this route with someone else? Does the ADD generation have the patience to wait for a payoff to a built-up star getting the top prize? Is the world title the culmination of a "made guy"?

The problem with Ryback wasn’t necessarily losing to Punk, it was losing sixteen zillion other matches in a row AFTER Punk. The Ryback formula was getting him some steam and then they just killed it off completely because they got bored of it. That’s the kind of path they should have taken with Reigns — destroy some fools to get the superman punch over, win the US title and defend it for a while ala Cena, then move up to the next level when fans demand it. This weird backwards shit they’ve done with him where they jump him to the top spot and then try to come up with a character for him after the fact is killing him.

BURN IT ALL WITH FIRE.
