Flair in ‘93
By Scott Keith on October 24, 2015
Oddly, I had TWO questions pertaining to Flair’s WWF run within minutes of each other.
Rumble ’93
I’ve recently come across an old dirtsheet and read that heading into Rumble ’93 that Flair was going to go over champion Bret Hart, and that Perfect was to win the Rumble, giving us Flair vs Perfect at Wrestlemania for the title. But to also expect Luger to play a pretty major role in this, or at least contributing to how this all was gonna shake out. Any of this ever on the table? Sounds pretty badass to me. But then I don’t see how we get to Hogan being challenged by a victorious, cheating Flair with Hogan getting #5.
Oh and on a side, how bout that Rumble ’93 roster? Old school all star team: Backland, Flair, Henning, Savage, Lawler, Martel, Colon, Duggan, Rotunda, Santana, Owen Hart (I just threw Owen in there for u for a little cheap Canadian-pop after the Royals drubbing of the Jays, sorry)
Thanks, love the BoD, much love from Buffalo!
Scott,
Before Ric Flair gave his official notice to WWE , what were the plans for him going into 93? A rematch with Bret at Royal Rumble? Also, Was his feud with Mr.Perfect supposed to lead to a match Wrestlemania 9?
I remember he was facing Bret at house shows even after giving his notice, though there never was a proper tv/ppv blowoff to the feud.
As to the first e-mailer, I don’t know what dirt sheet you were reading, but Flair gave notice well before Royal Rumble 93. He and Vince had pretty much agreed to part ways around Survivor Series if I remember correctly, and there wouldn’t have been any plans for him beyond putting over Bret and Perfect on the way out. Even before he quit, Vince was wanting to phase him out and basically told him so, so again it’s not like anyone was operating under delusions of Flair sticking around much longer. He was never making it to Wrestlemania and he was always just laying down for Perfect and going back to WCW. Certainly having the Flair-Perfect match at the Rumble would have made more sense, but they wanted to prop up their hot new show, Monday Night RAW, so having it there is understandable too.
