Overlooked WM Main Events

By Scott Keith on October 6, 2015

Hi Scott,  i have a couple of Wrestlemania related questions for your blog if you could help me out.
I was watching OSW Review on YouTube and it stated that Wrestlemania 6 received around about 100,000 less buys than Wrestlemania 5, yet if you were to go by the way that the WWE portrays its history, the Hogan-Warrior match would seem like it was a far bigger deal. This is coming from someone who loves that match and counts it as one of my favourites ever, but is seems like considering how successful it was, the previous years mega-powers explosion doesn’t get as much love. Is this because of the participants involved and if the outcome was different would it have been remembered better? Also are there other Main Events that should get more attention and some less so?

It would seem that way in hindsight, but business was really dropping fast in 1990 with Hogan taking time off for No Holds Barred and Warrior not exactly moving the chains as his replacement.  As noted before, Summerslam 90 actually did better than Wrestlemania.  My theory on Wrestlemania has always been that they basically divided the audience, so either way you went with the booking, you were going to alienate a large group of people.  That’s why WM5 worked so much better from a business standpoint: Randy Savage was pond scum and nearly a million people wanted to drop $30 to watch Hogan kick his ass.  The Warrior deal was more vague in the motivations involved.
