Brawl For All

I was watching the ’98 Brawl for All matches and they seem much more interesting to watch now than they did then. Lots of fans wonder who would win in a real bout and it can be a nice change of pace to watch something that isn’t predetermined from these guys. Seems to me that the problem was more that they didn’t prepare fans for what to expect and they were essentially using it as a gimmick to get one guy over. Do you think something like Brawl for All could be successful if it was done today? Maybe get an undercard guy over without the company rooting for anyone in particular?
You’re crazy if you think THAT was the problem with it. The problem was that guys were supposed to do “shoot” matches but were hampered by nonsensical rules and ended up getting injured, or in the case of Steve Williams, nearly career-ending injuries as a result. Plus fans didn’t understand the concept and neither did the guys doing the “fights”. Plus presenting a tournament when you can’t control the outcome kind of runs totally against the whole point of wrestling.
