The Cena syndrome
By Scott Keith on October 2, 2015
I know this is like beating a dead horse, but is anyone shocked that Cena (the guy who constantly squashed the World Champ) opens the show to high ratings and then midcard goofs (Rollins included) tank the show. They’ve created an environment where one and only one man has been allowed to get over for a decade. Everytime the fans latch onto a new guy, he’s ceremoniously squished by horrible booking. Ambrose, Ziggler, Wyatt, Cesaro, Owens. Vince’s obvious solution here will be to do a cash-in, have Cena win the title as soon as possible and bring in Rock, Austin and other legends to desperately pop ratings.
Im sorry in advance for this, but if the ratings are tanking and things are so desperate, why not do the Cena heel turn? The NWO angle turned a stale company into a juggernaut, AND sold tons of merchandise. And the best part is that corporate Cena can still "make wishes" because it’s what best for business.
The nWo juggernaut wasn’t because of Hogan’s heel turn. WCW was already turning it around because they had signed two hot new stars in Nash and Hall, and then Hogan’s turn took it to the next level. With Cena, if you turn him heel now, then all you have is heel Cena on top burying babyfaces instead of heels, and there’s no top star in the wings to replace him. So basically you’ve killed off your top babyface, and if it doesn’t help ratings then you’re in a Steve Austin 2001 situation where the toothpaste is out of the tube and now can’t go back in again. The time to turn him is when the company is hot and has someone else they can get behind.
