ECW name trademarks

By Scott Keith on August 23, 2015

Hi Scott, quick question…

I know WWE owns the naming rights of ECW and the library… Do they own and have trademarks on the names of ECW wrestlers? I know most ECW talent was able to keep their names after ECW folded, being that Cw Anderson didn’t have to change his name.. Neither did Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, Shane Douglas, Sandman, RVD, and a host of others. I am asking because Chikara is calling 2 Cold Scorpio "Too Cold Scorpio". He was also called "Too Cold" when he was in WCW Back in the early 90s too.

Yes, they bought the entire company and all the assets in 2001, lock stock and barrel. Guys like Sandman and Tommy Dreamer had previously used those names before coming to ECW, so they own their own likenesses, but Dudley Boys, for example, are considered to be the intellectual property of WWE.
