WWF Superstars of Wrestling October 10th, 1987

By Brian Bayless on August 18, 2015

October 10, 1987

From the Civic Center in Peoria, IL

Your hosts are Bruno Sammartino, Jesse “The Body” Ventura, and Vince McMahon

This week we will see clips of the Randy Savage vs. Honky Tonk Man match from “Saturday Night’s Main Event.” Plus, we will see the “Piledriver” music video. Also in action will be Strike Force, Demolition, and the featured match of Don Muraco vs. Cowboy Bob Orton.

“The Rock” Don Muraco vs. Cowboy Bob Orton

Muraco attacks Orton during the ring introductions. They brawl as Muraco wins that when he knocks Orton through the ropes. Back inside, Muraco hits a sorry excuse of a clothesline but Orton comes back with an eye rake. He sends Muraco to the floor and goes out to rough him up. Muraco ends up shoving Orton into the post then slams his head off of the stairs. Muraco attempts to suplex Orton out of the ring but that gets blocked. Orton suplexes Muraco back inside but Muraco ends up hooking Orton in a small package in a terrible spot for the win (2:16).

Thoughts: Bad match with a shitty finish. Muraco seemed to have blown up halfway through. This was pretty much the end for Orton in the WWF as he was gone from the company before the Survivor Series PPV.

Craig DeGeorge is on the interview platform with Bobby Heenan and Andre the Giant. Heenan tells us how Andre has not wrestled since WrestleMania III, when he was robbed, and promises that Andre will not step into the ring again until he gets to face Hulk Hogan. Heenan then tells us that day will come on Thanksgiving night at the “Survivor Series” in an elimination tag team match. Heenan runs down Hogan’s team (Superstar Billy Graham, Ken Patera, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Paul Orndorff)but says that is not enough to survive as they have Butch Reed, One Man Gang, Rick Rude, and King Kong Bundy to go along with Andre. Heenan tells Hogan once the eliminations start happening, Andre will put his hands around his neck and squeeze and squeeze. DeGeorge asks Andre for a comment as he tells us that he will be the survivor. It ends with a brief Survivor Series graphic. We finally know what the main event of the Survivor Series PPV will be (although you cannot tell that the whole show will be filled with elimination tag matches as that was not announced) and Heenan cut an excellent promo here. This pretty much guarantees another Hogan vs. Andre title match down the line.

Strike Force vs. Tiger Chung Lee & Barry Horowitz

Lee and Martel start things off. Martel hits a hurricarana then works the arm. Santana tags and slams Lee as we get an insert promo from Heenan and the Islanders, telling Strike Force they can face them anytime, anyplace. Horowitz tags in as Santana works the arm until Lee has enough and attacks Santana from behind. However, Santana fights off Horowitz and tags Martel, who runs wild. The crowd is quiet for this but seeing as it was the last show of the taping, its not as worrisome as you would think. Santana tags back in and puts Horowitz away with a flying forearm (3:33).

Thoughts: Not much to say about this one, really. Their feud with the Islanders is still being pushed.

Gene Okerlund runs down the card for the November 7th show at the Boston Garden. He brings out Brutus Beefcake, who will be facing Greg Valentine. Beefcake runs Valentine down for a minute in a basic promo.

King Harley Race w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Arthur Washington

Race works over Washington as we then get an insert promo from Race, who tells us comparing other wrestlers on the card to him is like comparing royalty to commoners. Race then puts Washington away with a cradle suplex (0:36).

Thoughts: Not an exciting promo but if you listen to Race’s promo and how he looks down upon “commoners” and think back to Hacksaw Jim Duggan’s introductory vignettes in which he declared his was a regular guy, you can see they are planting the seeds for these two to feud.

Okerlund is with the Junkyard Dog, who will be facing Ted DiBiase at the next Boston Garden show. JYD tells us he has never heard of a “brother” called “Virgile.” That is how he really pronounced that. JYD then rambles on for a little bit until walking away. Okerlund seemed to enjoy this promo a lot more than I did.

Van Van Horne & Mario Mancini vs. Demolition w/ Mr. Fuji

Ax beats the crap out of Mancini to start. Smash tags and continues the assault as we get an insert promo from Mr. Fuji, who is upset that they are playing the “Piledriver” music video instead of the video for Demolition’s song. Van Horne tags and also gets destroyed until Demolition puts him away with the Decapitation (2:33).

Thoughts: I guess the story is that Fuji is pissed about the Demolition music video not being played. Guess he wasn’t happy about the video they chose to play for next week’s show either.

We get the music video for the “Piledriver” song.

Now, we are shown clips from the Savage vs. Honky Tonk Man match from “Saturday Night’s Main Event.”

Jake Milliman & Lance Allen & Sivi Afi vs. “The Natural” Butch Reed & One Man Gang & Nikolai Volkoff w/ Slick

Volkoff graces us with the short version of the Russian National Anthem this week. We get an insert promo from Slick as he is excited to have all three of his guys in the ring for the first time. Slick’s guys beat the crap out of Allen and Milliman to start. Afi tags and chops Reed but ducks his head attempting a backdrop and gets kicked in the face. Volkoff tags and beats on Allen as Vince tells us that Elizabeth is alright from getting shoved down to the mat by the Honky Tonk Man on “Saturday Night’s Main Event” as Gang puts Allen away with a front suplex (2:37).

Thoughts: This really came off as all filler. None of the feuds Gang or Reed had going on were even mentioned here.

Okerlund brings out Jimmy Hart and the Honky Tonk Man, who makes fun of the Boston accent and Brutus Beefcake before telling us that Savage is not a fighter as he resorted to his woman bringing out Hulk Hogan. Honky then tells us that Elizabeth got down on her knees as she wanted to touch him then tells us his fans in Boston will see him beat Savage. Good stuff from Honky. Savage/Honky is clearly the best feud the WWF had going on at this time.

In action next week will be Brutus Beefcake, The New Dream Team, and the Honky Tonk Man. Plus, we will see the “Girls in Cars” music video by Robbie Dupree.

Final Thoughts: Not much of a show. It was a good refresher in case you missed “Saturday Night’s Main Event” and the only other newsworthy thing was we found out the main event for the Survivor Series show. Other than that, it was not really worth seeing.
