Storylines and whatnot at the end of WCW

By Scott Keith on August 16, 2015

Hey Scott, I was avidly reading the sheets in 2000, so I very clearly remember a lot of the concern surrounding a potential sale of WCW; however, being much younger, I didn’t quite understand a lot of the things that were happening at the time. In short, I was very surprised when the sale actually happened. I thought it was going to drag out longer.

That leads me to this: do you remember if WCW was building to anything in particular at that time in terms of storylines, or were they just coasting along until either buyout or death? Like, was there a long term plan for Steiner, his championship, who was going to dethrone him, returns for guys like Goldberg, Nash, or Sting, any summer booking plans, etc?
I just remember it was March, Greed, then final Nitro, and adios.

Also, I’m well aware of WCW’s napkin-booking and general short-sightedness, so if they had no plans, then forget all of this and let us know how your wedding party went.

Thanks!

Someone did a shoot interview with Bischoff a while back where he talked about his plans if the Fusient thing went through and I don’t remember the details, but I do know Rob Van Dam was going to be the lead star and they were going to hit the reset button for the third time with the April show. It was going to be called The Big Bang and apparently Bischoff wanted to take WCW in a totally different direction, kind of like Bischoff’s Matrats promotion that came along afterwards. The thing is that WCW would have been on a very limited budget under Fusient, so probably everyone who wasn’t paid directly by TBS would have been cut loose anyway and the rest re-signed to TNA-style deals where they were paid by the appearance. Without a sweetheart deal to bail them out like TNA got I just don’t see WCW sticking around with Bischoff in charge, regardless.
