Morbid Clinging…

By Scott Keith on March 2, 2014

Since I'm going through a personal WCW revival, I picked up the Death Of WCW book for the first time in years.

I'm reading the part when Vince McMahon was first mentioned as a potential buyer of WCW. It reads '…the WWF had the right to match any offer for the company as a result of the settlement terms of their copyright infringement lawsuit.'

Is that even accurate because it doesn't make sense to me.

Also, do you think that Vince purposely let Hogan, Nash, Hall & Bret go to WCW as a ploy to bring down the competition from the inside? That Outsider angle really hit too close to home for me to believe that it's a possibility.

Letting four of your biggest stars go to the competition and then losing 82 weeks straight in the ratings is a strange way to go about defeating them.
Anyway, when Hall and Nash jumped to WCW, the WWF's legal team immediately sued on the grounds that WCW was deliberately misleading people into thinking that the two promotions were working together, and because Hall was basically doing the Razor Ramon character. It was settled out of court, and as you note, one of the terms was that Vince got the ability to have first crack at purchasing WCW if it ever went up for sale. Which is exactly what happened a few years later.
