The PPV Top 5 – December
By Scott Keith on December 7, 2013
Everyone loves lists! Everyone loves a good GOAT thread. Starting this month, I am going to present the Top 5 PPV matches of the current month, starting with THIS month, December. Doing some research, we have candidates from This Tuesday in Texas, In Your House, Armageddon, TLC and, of course, Starrcade. I’m only including the big two and leaving the indies and TNA out, therefore making this list very subjective and not all-inclusive. But feel free to voice your opinion of any indy matches, or TNA matches that you feel may make the cut.
Let’s begin, shall we?
5. Sting vs. Big Van Vader – WCW Starrcade – 12/28/92
It was the finals of the 8-man King of Cable tournament. Sting had gotten past Brian Pillman and Rick Rude, while Vader notched wins over Tony Atlas and Dustin Rhodes. The winner of the tournament got a trophy. In my opinion, it was just a reason to have a tournament, because…..tournaments are awesome. AMIRITE?
4. Rey Mysterio, Jr. vs. Juventud Guerrera vs. Billy Kidman – WCW Starrcade – 12/27/98
Kidman was the WCW Cruiserweight Champion at the time this match occurred. Juventud was a member of the Latino World Order, who were led by Eddy Guerrero. Rey and Kidman had not yet formed the Filthy Animals. This was the opening match for Starrcade 98, and would go on to be the best match on the show.

3. The Rock vs. Chris Jericho – WWF Vengeance 2001 – 12/9/01
The Rock came into this match as the “World Champion” after WCW was dissolved at Survivor Series 2001. This was the first match in an attempt to unify the “World” title and the WWF Championship. Later on, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin would take on Kurt Angle, with the winner taking on the winner of THIS match. Rock and Jericho had an awesome match at No Mercy 2001. This one was just as awesome.
2. Ryback & Team Hell No vs. The Shield – TLC: Tables Ladders Chairs – 12/16/12
So, The Shield we all know and love were still kind of unproven on WWE television at this point. Ryback was supposed to get a title shot against WWE champ CM Punk, but Punk was pulled out due to a legit knee injury, and Team Hell No had fallen victim to a Shield beat down and wanted revenge. So we got this match. It was a TLC match, but it differed in that you could win by pinfall or submission. After this match, I do believe that we all….believed in The Shield.

1. Lex Luger vs. Ric Flair – NWA Starrcade – 12/26/88
In 1988, Lex Luger left the Four Horsemen, found a friend in Barry Windham, who then promptly turned on him and replaced him in the Horsemen. Luger would go through the Horsemen in revenge and would feud with the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair. They had a great, memorable match at Great American Bash, that ended in controversy when Luger lost due to “excessive blood loss” when it appeared he had the match won. This was the rematch, and is the greatest match the month of December has ever seen.
