ROH TV 1-19-13

By Scott Keith on January 20, 2013

After a 4 week layoff, finally a new ROH TV episode. But first,
the news:

Of course, the biggest news is El Generico signing with WWE.
While technically not a ROH employee (the Final Battle match was a one-shot
deal), he’s easily the most over guy on the indy circuit today. Whether or not
they will keep the main parts of the character that got him over in the first place
remains to be seen, though I’m not very optimistic that they won’t just unmask
him and make him another random NXT guy with a goofy name.
Also likely WWE-bound is Shelton Benjamin, who asked for and
received his release shortly after Final Battle. So far there’s yet to be any
announcement of him signing with the E, and ROH has said that he’s welcome to
work on a per-appearance basis, though as of now he’s not booked for any ROH
events. Speaking of WGTT, Charlie Hass is apparently none too happy about Shelton
leaving and has been a pain in the ass backstage, and was left off this TV
taping as a result.
Other news: Adam Cole and Sami Callahan (of PWG and DGUSA)
are reportedly getting tryouts with WWE, though I’m not sure when they’re
happening. I’m starting to think that putting Triple H in charge of
developmental just might work out. Still no word on Mike Bennett jumping ship,
however. And now, the show…
New, more high-tech looking video package opens the show.
Taped from Baltimore.
Alabama Attitude (Corey
Hollis & Mike Posey) vs. Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly:
The AA are just
a couple indy jobbers, though Posey used to be a ref for WWE and TNA. The Tale
of the Tape gets the new slicker-looking graphics too. Hollis and O’Reilly
start us off, pretty crappy chain wrestling sequence goes nowhere and both guys
tag out. Another brief chain wrestling bit ends with a Fish elbow (and what
kind of name is Bobby Fish, anyway? “Fish elbow” just seems stupid even as I
type it) and he goes to the eye gouge. Posey holds onto the top rope to block a
suplex, but O’Reilly kicks him in the back as he tries to run the ropes and
Fish nails him with a dropkick. We go into the “face-in-peril” formula now,
though the crowd is pretty solidly behind Fish and O’Reilly, probably because they’re
not jobbers. The heels hit a modified Sidewinder for 2, slingshot senton for 2
by Fish. O’Reilly with a snap suplex for 2. O’Reilly runs into a boot on a
blind charge and Posey gets the tepid tag, Hollis comes in with a double kick
off the top and starts throwing forearms and kicks. Neckbreaker on O’Reilly,
Suplex on Fish, but Posey gets caught playing to the crowd and gets nailed by O’Reilly.
Posey comes in on a blind tag and they do an idiotic looking thing that somehow
ends with Fish DDTing O’Reilly. That just made no sense at all. Alabama Jam on
Fish for 2, Hollis gets launched over the top by Fish and German suplexed on
the floor by O’Reilly as Posey gets Germaned by Fish in the ring. Some
double-team kicking and a brainbuster finish Posey at 5:33. Pretty much a
squash, but decent enough. **.
Nigel McGuiness is in the ring to call out Jay Lethal. Nigel
talks about having to toss Lethal out of Final Battle (as some jerkoff tries to
do the “What” thing whenever Nigel pauses, but the crowd ain’t having it, and
good for them. It’s 2013, you assclown). He decides that he’ll let Lethal off
with a warning, but this is his only warning. All Lethal wants to know, in
plain English, is how he can get his title shot against Kevin Steen. Nigel
tells him that there’s nothing he can do about it, and if Jay wants a title
shot he has to convince Steen. Pretty useless segment, and any time McGuiness is
on camera and doesn’t call someone a wanker I’m disappointed.
Inside ROH: They
show the end of the Cole/Hardy match (which just pisses me off all over again)
and it’s pretty funny how they have to blur out the entire crowd because they are
all giving Hardy the finger. Both Hardy and Charlie Haas bitch about BJ Whitmer
getting the TV title shot against Cole next week, and they kind of have a
point. Last time we saw Whitmer he had to be carried out, and he’s not even a
singles wrestler. Steve Corino makes an appearance, and we run down the
brackets for the Top Prospects Tournament.
Truth Martini joins us for the next match. Great…
Top Prospects
Tournament: “Rock and Roll” Mike Sydal vs. QT Marshall (w/ RD Evans):
This
is an 8-man tourney, with the opening round over the next 4 weeks, the
semifinals at the next TV taping in 2 weeks, and I assume the final will be at
the next PPV on March 2nd. Sydal is Evan Bourne’s younger brother, and is doing
a late 80s-early 90s rock star gimmick, even being billed from “Paradise City”.
Fans throw toilet paper at Marshall instead of streamers, and a fan has a sign
that says “Quite Terrible Marshall”. And if that didn’t get the point across
about him sucking, here’s a pretty healthy “Marshall sucks!” chant to really drive
it home. Nothing worth recapping happens for the first couple minutes, then
they fuck up a backdrop to the outside and Sydal ends up on the apron. Evans
tries to pull him down but gets kicked into the guardrail, and Marshall throws
a shot to Sydal’s face that just barely makes contact. Marshall hits a
decent-looking backdrop suplex for 2. Now Marshall goes into his 80s offense as
Truth Martini starts talking about “that good old gloryhole”. What the fuck?
Please don’t let him EVER do commentary again. Sydal reverses God’s Gift (the
move, not the guy) into a DDT to make the comeback. Neckbreaker and he goes up
top for a rana that Marshall totally fucks up his end of, nearly dropping Sydal
on his face before clearly diving through the ropes on his own. Jesus… Sydal
hits a moonsault from the top to the floor on Marshall and Evans, doing his
best to not make this match a total pile of dogshit. It gets 2 back in the
ring. A standing moonsault (barely) hits Marshall’s knees, and the God’s Gift (running
Dominator) ends it at 5:35. You know what’s sad? Marshall is probably winning
this tournament, seeing as how he and TaDaruis Thomas are the only guys in it
under contract with ROH. *1/4, all for Sydal, and I’d really like to see him
against someone that isn’t shitty.
Coleman & Alexander and The Briscoes cut separate backstage
promos with Veda Scott. I’m liking her more and more every time I see her.
Supposedly she’s a trained worker too.
ROH Tag Team Title:
Cedric Alexander and Caprice Coleman vs. The Briscoes (c):
Yeah, this
should be pretty good. This stems from Final Battle, where The Briscoes won the
titles from S.C.U.M. and immediately gave C+C a title shot just out of respect.
Crowd is split 50/50 here. Mark starts with Alexander, the exchange rollups and
both guys tag out. Jay and Coleman do some basic technical stuff for a bit,
Coleman hits a nice dropkick for 2 and tags in Alexander. C+C hit a drop
toehold-legdrop combo, but Mark tags himself in as Jay bounces of the ropes and
he comes in punching. Irish whip by Mark is reversed and C+C hit a spinebuster-leg
lariat combo, Briscoes bail and C+C take them both out with somersault dives to
the floor as we go to commercial.
Back with Jay in control of Alexander, Mark in now and he
pounds away in the corner, and hits a vertical suplex for 2. Jay back in with a
big kick in the corner and he grabs a chinlock. Alexander gets free but gets
blasted with another kick, and now Mark is back in. The Briscoes control with
lots of quick tagging and some double-team stuff. Coleman gets the hot tag and
punches away, STO on Jay, rolling Northern lights on Mark with Jay trying to break
it up and the third one turning into a double NL for 2. Jay bails and Alexander
is tagged in. Coleman puts Mark in the position for a DVD, Alexander comes off
the top with a stomp to the back of Mark and Coleman DVDs him onto Alexander’s
knees. Sweet! Jay makes the save and dumps Alexander. They go for the Doomsday Device on Coleman but Alexander breaks it up. Jay is down, Coleman hits the top
rope rana on Mark, sending him to the middle of the ring while landing in a pin
on Jay, then Alexander hits a HUGE frog splash on Mark. They both get 2, and
this is one of the few cases where the “This is Awesome!” chant is actually
appropriate. C+C go for something, but Jay pulls Alexander out to the floor and
the Briscoes hit a powerbomb-neckbreaker combo on Coleman and he bails to the
floor. Alexander back in, Michinoku driver by Jay and the froggy elbow from
Mark gets 2. Doomsday Device finishes Alexander at 10:07. ***1/2, great match
that deserved another 5 minutes or so, and no totally fucked-up Total Elimination from C+C. They’re learning… They do the mutual respect handshake deal
and Corino, Jacobs, and Rhino attack from behind and take everyone out. Rhino
is wearing a S.C.U.M. shirt (that looks like he made it at home), so I guess he’s
an official part of the group now.
Pretty good show overall. The Marshall match sucked (big
shock, I know), but it was more than made up for by the tag title match.
Unfortunately Matt Hardy is wrestling on next weeks show.
